EDITORIAL Innovation means…?

Innovation and innovative are two amongst the most lazily used words we see in submissions to this magazine. There are, incidentally, quite a few others – one day we probably ought to publish the list, to the mortification of some PR professionals.

I

n preparation for chairing the judging panel for the Fastener Technology Innovator 2013 Competition at Fastener Fair Stuttgart, I thought I’d better take a look at the Business Dictionary. Innovation is defined as the “process of

translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates value.” The dictionary adds: “to be called an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need.” It also makes the point that evolution is equally valid as revolution when it comes to innovation, the continuous and dynamic as important as the disruptive and new. With all of which now in mind, why not take a look at the

array of entries from page 66 of this magazine and see how they measure up in your judgement. I’ll be very interested to know which you view as being a worthy recipient of the title – and why. Just email phil.matten@fastenerandfixing.com

A Groundhog Year? I’m not sure whether one can have a Groundhog Year but on

the trade defence front I can see signs of 2013 turning into one. The EU’s circumvention investigation on stainless steel fasteners

is due to come to a conclusion by early March although it seems optimism or pessimism (depending where companies sit) about its outcome is already driving up European stainless fastener prices, even curiously on some products not subject to anti-dumping. Circumvention is a curse for manufacturers and for law-abiding

importers. It is quite clear, once anti-dumping measures have been applied, importers involved in transhipping or fraudulent coding to evade duties are breaking the law. Now there are serious concerns about whether transhipment of carbon steel fasteners has occurred via Taiwan. Authorities there are adamant the flow of fasteners from China into Taiwan has been ‘stable’ but OLAF is clearly digging fervently for evidence. Opinions, of course, will be polarised over whether a

circumvention investigation, by no means a foregone conclusion, would be healthy for the European fastener industry and its customers. What is sure, were it to happen, is that it would be deeply disruptive and even more deeply divisive. Seemingly a vain hope, but isn’t it time to come up with a more incisive and effective mechanism that does not plunge the market into another tar pit of uncertainty.
