EXHIBITIONS
Brazil has a strong domestic fastener manufacturing sector, something to which continuous visitor interest in an extensive range of manufacturing technology exhibits testified. Sacma Limbiate had a large, centrally located stand, with an SP 28 featuring combined header, threader and pointer stations prominently displayed. The machine, already sold, was destined for delivery to Metalúrgica Hassmann in Imigrante. Carlo Salvi, although not featuring a machine on its stand, also confirmed the recent delivery of a Multipress header into Brazil. Systek Tecnologia also had consistent interest in two of its inspection machines, one for screws and one for nuts. San Shing presented a nut-sorting machine, also sold, on its stand, together with bolt measurement and nut manufacturing technology. One of the busiest stands was SouthWind International, which
featured a manufacturing cell, comprising a Tecno Impiante SKP-6 wire drawer, a one-die, two-blow header from Yih Woen and a Chien-Tsai thread roller, both from Taiwan. Tooling companies include Sala Punzoni and MDM Special Tools from Italy. Coating technology companies were also very evident and included Dörken do Brasil Anticorrosivos, Coventya Quimica Ltda, and Zincagem Martins – the latter again proving a visitor magnet, probably aided by characteristic Brazilian hospitality, through most of the show. Another characteristic of the Brazilian fastener industry
is a thirst for knowledge almost equal to that for cafezinho. Fastener Fair Brasil organised an excellent Technical Symposium programme in a special theatre within the show area. Almost without exception the auditorium for the sixteen presentations run across the two days was better than eighty percent filled. Topics included fastener inspection and certification, coating technologies, fastener failure analysis and causes, and application and manufacturing techniques. In total there were 141 exhibitors from 17 countries. That
was a reduction from the first edition in 2011. Fewer exhibitors appeared to be using the show as a cost effective way of exploring the Brazilian market, although Bufab Stainless and Ojop Sweden,
had taken stands for the first time with this intention. Around a quarter of exhibitors were Brazilian companies,
again fewer than in 2011 but still, because of the quality of stand presentation, a highly visible presence. There was a noticeable increase in Italian exhibitors – fourteen in 2012. In addition to the manufacturing technology companies, Pirovano, Faire and Fontana Fasteners do Brasil had good stands. Growermetal showed its pressed products and Inoxdadi and Inoxmare signalled interest in the Brazilian stainless steel market. The visually dominant stainless presence was the large Viraj
Profiles stand at the entrance. Viraj started supplying stainless fasteners into Brazil in 2011 and expected 2012 shipments to reach 6,000 tonnes. Despite protectionist government policies a cost conscious Brazilian fastener market undoubtedly imports significant volumes from Asia. While none of the booths were particularly busy there was steady interest in the Taiwanese and Chinese companies accounting for just over half the number of exhibitors. Brazil is a complex fastener market. It has huge potential,
not least from the upcoming football World Cup and Olympics. The economy, though, was distinctly uncomfortable through 2012 and Brazilian businesses remain deeply concerned about ‘Custo Brazil’ – literally the costs from bureaucracy, taxation, currency, and infrastructure impeding competitiveness and efficiency of industry. On the other hand government instincts are highly protectionist, resulting in stringent import licencing requirements and high import tariffs. All of which, taking a perspective on the two editions of
Fastener Fair Brasil, makes more impressive the evident care with which the show has been balanced to suit its market. Some exhibitors question whether the speed of change in the market warrants an annual show so it will be interesting to see Mack Brooks’ decision on that score. That the show has a strong future, though, is in little doubt - although whether as much confidence can be ascribed to solving São Paulo’s traffic problems is another matter.
