DeWalt launches cordless framing nailer

DeWalt is launching at the Show what it confidently claims is the world’s first gas-free cordless framing hammer. The new XR Lithium-ion nailer combines the power tools manufacturer’s brushless motor technology with its new 4.0Ah battery pack to produce a framing nailer with the power to drive a 90mm ring shank nail in temperatures as low as -15ºC.

Unlike other nailers on the market, this innovative tool does not rely on combustible fuels, such as gas cartridges, to drive a nail. As a result, DeWalt argues, there is no carbon build-up, and the nailer does not require regular cleaning, maintaining consistent performance throughout its life. Users also save money because there is no need to buy costly gas canisters.

A combination of the powerful 4.0Ah battery pack, alongside the efficient transfer of energy from the brushless motor allows the DeWalt

XR nailer to deliver over 600 nails per charge, allowing even the heaviest users to only have to change the battery once to complete a full day’s work. The battery pack is also interchangeable with over 20 other tools in DeWalt’s XR range, ensuring that if a battery runs out while the user is on a roof, it can quickly be swapped with a cordless drill or circular saw in order to get the job done. DeWalt also points out that battery power also delivers a range of Health & Safety benefits. Without the need for gas canisters, there is no storage/leakage of highly flammable gases, and no toxic emissions in a confined working environment. There is also a significant reduction in noise output, because the tool operation is mechanical rather than explosive. The nailer measures 345mm long and fits easily between 400mm

centre studs when erecting partition frameworks. Design features include a tool-free depth adjuster, a profiled nose piece for good visibility and grip when firing at an angle, and fault indicator lights that instantly show why a nail has not been fired. There are four kit options in the range – DCN690N, DCN690M2, DCN690M2K and DCK260M2. The bare unit ‘N version’ (supplied without batteries, kit box and charger), allows users who operate DeWalt’s XR Lithium-ion battery platform to expand their tool systems, without buying additional battery packs or chargers. To complete its nailer offering, the manufacturer has also designed a range of high quality nails, which are available as ring shank (galvanised, hot dip galvanised, stainless steel and bright finishes) or smooth (galvanised or bright finish) between 50mm and 90mm in length. All nails already meet Eurocode 5 regulations, in advance of this becoming an EU legal requirement in July 2013.
