Tackle tool costs

As well as some eye-catching new products, Hilti will highlight ways in which it believes it can help hirers increase their operational efficiency. Alan Guthrie reports.

A world first is promised on Hilti’s Executive Hire Show stand, with the launch of the TE-30A36 cordless combi hammer. Power comes from a 36V Lithium-ion battery with an unprecedented 6.0Ah capacity, which charges in only 42 minutes and is claimed to provide sufficient energy to drill over fifty 16mm by 150mm holes in concrete.

company’s Active Torque Control (ATC) is incorporated to protect the operator should the tool bit jam. Remarkably, Hilti states that the TE-30A36 out-performs its corded equivalent, offering users increased productivity and representing an attractive

mobile solution for serial drilling and corrective chiselling. It also shows just how far battery technology has advanced.

New also will be the VC 20-U-Y hybrid vacuum, which can be used cordless at job sites without a convenient power supply. The machine can collect dust created by wet and dry drilling, cutting and grinding applications, as well as for normal cleaning tasks. When run off an electrical supply, it can also charge 14V, 22V and 36V Hilti Lithium-ion batteries, increasing its versatility. Boxed Hilti tools can also be stored on top of the vacuum, which has extending handles that enable it to be used as a trolley.

Besides these new launches, Hilti will be highlighting ways in which, it believes, it can help hirers achieve greater operational efficiencies. “It is clear to us that hire companies are working hard in challenging times to differentiate themselves from competitors, increase customer satisfaction and reduce overall costs,” said Walid Hussain, Head of Product Management with Hilti (Gt. Britain) Ltd. “We see hirers looking at ways to keep the average age of their fleet low, since old tools can lead to customer dissatisfaction and higher repair costs. Looking at the total life cost of running tools, rather than just the initial cost, helps achieve a better return on investment.

“It is fascinating to see how different companies consider this issue from so many angles, with no single solution that fits all. These range from looking at spare parts, labour, transport and handling, to depreciation, utilisation rates, optimum size of fleet, and repair cycle times. One example is how some consider cordless tool batteries as spare parts, while others regard them as consumables, yet the cost of a battery is almost half the price of the tool itself. As users are more frequently choosing cordless equipment for reasons like convenience, Health & Safety and - as with the TE-30A36 - even better performance, this means such costs could be hidden. Labour charges can also represent a significant proportion of the total tool ownership cost.We have been working with many hire companies and what we have learnt is that, while there may be no single solution, we can tailor services for our customers and help them achieve greater efficiency.”

Hilti says its Tool Service Centre in Glasgow is one such element towards this goal. The facility deals with all tools collected for service and repair, and while the manufacturer aims to turn equipment round in less than four days, when EHN recently visited the site, Hilti’s statistics showed a 2.88 day turnaround from collection back to the customer.

Dedicated service bays are equipped to deal with specific product types, and computerised diagnostic techniques are used. These can indicate other parts that need replacement or upgrading, which can be undertaken at the same time.

Such preventative

maintenance reduces future repairs and downtime, and hirers do not have to spend time sourcing and fitting components. Factors like this, according to Hilti, illustrate the value of assessing total tool life costs, a message it will be promoting at the Show.
