Lombardini lines up
Alan Guthrie visits the new facility at Lombardini’s Italian HQ for producing its latest low-emission diesel engines.
Like other manufacturers, Lombardini aims for precision and reliability in its products, and the same evidently holds true for its production logistics. When EHN reported on the development of the company’s Kohler KDI water-cooled diesel engine line-up in our November/December 2011 issue, the manufacturer stated that production would be well under way by the following September. This commitment has been duly met, and was no mean achievement, since it involved establishing a dedicated new production line covering 236m and including 39 assembly stations, 11 of which are automated. It also required considerable investment at Lombardini’s Reggio Emilia factory by its parent, Kohler Group.
terms of power, performance and low emissions. Hirers will see the KDI engines appearing on an increasing number of machines from now on, such as items of compact plant, generators and access equipment, and we will be giving details of the units on our Executive Hire Show stand, as well a supporting other exhibitors there by explaining the backup services we can provide. We will also be highlighting other engines from our range that are commonly found on hire machinery, from compaction plates and pumps, to mowers and wood chippers.”
Making its debut at the Show will be the 8kW (10.9hp) KD15-440 diesel engine, the first in a revised series of the popular 15LD air-cooled, single cylinder units. Other models will be launched during this year. They have been re-designed to meet the demand for engines offering lower emissions, improved fuel economy and reduced noise, without affecting performance. Service intervals have also been extended.
Production of the new engines has been based in Europe to enable strict quality control and short delivery times.
The KDI (Kohler Direct Injection) range has been designed to meet the Final Tier 4 – Stage IIIB regulations concerning emissions, which came into effect on 1 January 2013. Lombardini’s designers essentially began with a blank sheet of paper in developing the line- up, which comprises 1.9 and 2.5 litre engines with maximum outputs of 42 and 55.4kW (56.3 and 74.2hp). Production of a 3.4 litre 100kW (134hp) unit is scheduled for next year. Amongst several innovative characteristics, the engines utilise a very high pressure common rail injection system for better combustion, and a waste-gated turbocharger to reduce particulate matter output and increase power.
Also significant is that the emission reduction is achieved without having to incorporate ancillary components such as diesel particulate filters, thereby reducing fuel wastage and giving a compact footprint. “As a result, the KDI engines give us a real competitive edge,” states Andy Collins, Lombardini (UK)’s Operations Manager. “For more than a year we have been talking to OEMs about them, and many which have used them in product trials are reporting very positive results in

The KD15-440’s air intake is said to last five times longer than that of its predecessor, achieved by incorporating a cyclonic separator with a pre-filter, as well as a dust removal valve in the filter itself. The fuel tank also has a two-stage filter system. The primary intake filter is designed for easy access and can be replaced without using tools. A secondary filter is fitted to prevent dirt and dust from entering the system during refuelling or maintenance. The overall dimensions of the units, as well as the fixing points, have not been altered, enabling the KD15 engines to be substituted for the older models with minimum inconvenience.
In addition, a drain tap enables the removal of water and impurities that accumulate at the bottom of the fuel tank, for cleaning without major disassembly. The injection pump has new connections for improved reliability and, overall, Lombardini believes these enhancements will make the KD15-440 appeal strongly to OEMs and to hire industry users.
