Powering ahead

Makita UK will be telling hirers about what it describes as a world first at the Executive Hire Show. Alan Guthrie reports.

Professional power tool users have constantly sought products that give greater power and productivity, but another factor becoming equally important is the environmental impact of equipment, particularly in terms of emissions and fuel consumption.

Makita has been busy addressing these requirements. As we reported in last year’s July/August issue, the manufacturer has introduced various outdoor power products incorporating the latest version of its MM4 (Makita Mini 4-stroke) engine, including trimmers, brushcutters, blowers and pumps. Now, however, the company has launched the world’s first 4-stroke disc cutter, the EK7650H, which has a 76cc version of the MM4 at its heart.

“For many product applications, we believe the MM4 is the way forward,” said Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager for Makita (UK). “It is designed to deliver similar horsepower to equivalent capacity 2-stroke machines, making it ideal for a 4-stroke disc cutter, which requires more power as it cuts deeper into stone or concrete. And it does away with the need for mixing oil and petrol, simplifying on-site fuel provision and eliminating a major source of hire equipment damage from people re-fuelling incorrectly. It also reduces the maintenance costs and down-time commonly associated with piston and cylinder replacement on 2-stroke equipment.”

The disc cutter weighs 12kg and twin roller castors are fitted to the front chassis bar to aid accurate line cutting. An automatic decompression system is incorporated which reduces the pull cord effort required by 40% for easy starting. While Makita does not envisage the 4-stroke disc cutter replacing 2-stroke equivalents at this time, the manufacturer believes hirers and contractors will appreciate the availability of a greener alternative that, according to its research, can use 30% less fuel and reduce running costs by 40% when factoring in both fuel and oil.

Not surprisingly, the EK7650H will take centre stage on Makita’s Executive Hire Show stand. Other highlights will include the EX2650LH 4-stroke split shaft system that

incorporates a 25.4cc MM4 engine and accepts line

trimmer, brushcutter, pole saw, cultivator and hedge trimmer

attachments, which, the manufacturer says,

can save 40% on fuel and up to 60% when taking both fuel and oil into account. Also displayed will be the EA3201S 2-stroke chainsaw, as Makita’s entry- level tool suitable for general users, a hire market that Makita believes is growing. It has a 35cm bar

chain that can be tensioned without tools.

The engine has a patented pressurised lubrication system. The wet sump has a baffled pick-up, and the piston pulse pressure generated by the piston movement is harnessed to pump lubricant around the oil galleries through a series of non-return valves. This is designed to enable operation in any position without risk of damage through oil starvation.

The EK7650H accepts a 12in blade, although the tool’s spindle speed allows a 14in blade and guard to be fitted if required. A vibration dampening system similar to the one used on Makita’s chainsaws is incorporated, giving a quoted HAV reading of 2.7m/s2

.

Water dust suppression capability is provided, and the air intake and filters are located at the top of the engine to reduce the amount of dust drawn in.

The company also expects to have a new 2-stroke tool, aimed at the construction industry, ready to unveil at the exhibition. Other highlights will include 18V cordless power tools like the BDF459 drill/driver, the BTD129 impact driver, and the BHP459 combi drill. These have brushless motors that give less friction and longer running times, and also allow the tools to be more compact. Makita will clearly have a varied selection of new and recently introduced power tool products ready for inspection on its stand, illustrating the diverse nature of the markets that the company serves, as well as the significant number of hire opportunities available.
