“Like an Aladdin’s Cave”

Alan Guthrie talks to hirers about why attending the Executive Hire Show is so essential for their businesses, and why other industry professionals should attend.

Chris Ryder, Workshop Manager, Atom Tool Hire, Nottingham

One of the things I appreciate most about the Show is that, not only can you see the latest products available, but you can also talk to the people who designed them face-to-face rather than over the phone. This makes it so much easier to really understand how they work. In some instances at previous Shows, we have been able to make suggestions about small design alterations on certain items of equipment that would make them stronger for hire industry usage, simpler for a customer to operate or easier to service. The exhibition is like an Aladdin’s Cave of tools

and equipment, and you never know what exciting new things you are going to come across. In the past it has introduced us to products we would not have known about otherwise, such as the Liquid Hammer mixer cleaner from Parker Merchanting, and dehumidifiers from Dri-Eaz. It’ll be good to touch base with first-time exhibitors like Pinnacle Power Equipment, whose Eliet shredder is included in our garden machinery fleet, and I’ll also be keen to explore the latest launches from suppliers highlighted on the Innovation Trail around the Main Hall and the Top Tier.

John, pictured extreme right with, from left, Director Tony Criddle, Hire Controller Brian Spencer and MD Neil Johnson, told EHN:

The Show is an opportunity for the managers of all five of our depots to meet up and spend productive time together - typically, from day to day, we just speak to each other on the phone and I’m sure other hire companies with several branches find the same thing. We talk together about the business on our way up to the Ricoh Arena and we virtually have a mini meeting as we discuss things. And as we look at all the new products on display, each of us can give our opinion on them and we can make quick decisions. We encourage staff from the hire desks and the workshops to attend. It helps them to understand more about the industry they work in. And often you can answer a future request from a customer by getting a product that you remember having seen at the Show. Last year we were impressed by the Camon electric log splitters on the Tracmaster stand, and we later added the SP7E model to our fleet. It’s compact enough to fit in a car boot so customers can take it away with them immediately, and being electric it is cleaner than petrol units.

Steve Moore, MD, Gem Tool Hire & Sales

Quite simply the Executive Hire Show is the premier event for our industry. It’s the best opportunity to see all the new products available, talk to suppliers and place orders. The social element of visiting the exhibition is also important, since you inevitably meet up with a lot of industry contacts as you go round. Shortly before the event, staff from all three of our depots in Banbury, Bicester and Rugby will meet to discuss what equipment we need to add to replenish our fleet, and to consider new items that our customers might be requesting, creating a list of the exhibitors we want to see. We will be buying more compact Dosko stump grinders from The Hire Supply Company, since the ones we already have are constantly on hire, and we like the fact that the teeth can be rotated, extending their life. We will also be looking closely at compact dumpers, as we need to buy more to meet demand.

Derek Coleman, MD, Cotswold Tool & Plant Hire, Chipping Norton Several of us plan to attend

the Show, going on different days to enable us to man the shop effectively throughout. We always find the exhibition very worthwhile, and it is a great way of seeing what’s new on the market and for getting information about equipment direct from the suppliers. It’s all too easy to just keep buying the same items you always have, and you have to keep abreast of the latest developments to ensure you are offering the most appropriate kit for customers’ needs.

Joe Paterson, Owner, Anglian Plant & Tool Hire, Tunstead, Norfolk

We opened a new depot in Mildenhall, Suffolk, in October, chiefly offering tools and equipment to complement our Tunstead head office that focuses on larger plant. We see significant opportunities in tool hire and we plan to open another depot in the Norwich area by the end of this year. So I will be visiting the Show in order to look closely at equipment we could add to the fleet as we develop the business. I will be checking out Avant Tecno’s compact loaders, which seem to be very versatile machines, and as we are receiving more enquiries for powered access machinery, I will be interested to see the latest products on display for that market. I will also be looking at the software suppliers exhibiting, because we need a new system that meets our requirements as we expand.
