Youth General Interest


Checkmate Chess! Develop your child’s intellect through the royal game of chess! Chess has been proven to enhance children’s motivation, concentration, focus, social skills and creativity. No previous knowledge of chess is necessary. Each class consists of fun, interactive teaching and guided practice time. Both beginners and experienced players are welcome and can get to the next level under the guidance of an experienced Chess Scholars coach. There will also be a chess competition with prizes!

Chess Scholars Camp


Camp is designed for both beginners and experienced young players. All participants learn cool new strategies at the appropriate level from a renowned Chess Scholars coach. Each class consists of a fun interactive teaching period and guided practice time. There will also be a chess competition with prizes! Each camper takes home a chess set and an award. Please bring a snack.

In a perfect match of writing and photography, this course teaches you to have a “photographic eye” and a writing style that is equally artistic. Participants write poetry, stories and nonfiction expository papers to accompany the pictures taken on “nature photo shoots.” Students then combine these to create beautifully polished articles worthy of National Geographic.

Reading Laboratory


Become a great reader in the Reading Laboratory! Learn how to get the most out of what you read. This class focuses on reading comprehension and fluency. Students will learn the explicit reading strategies of: questioning, predicting, connections, inferring, summarizing and


synthesizing, through the use of fun and engaging reading selections. Students gain the skills and tools needed to improve their grades and increase standardized test scores. Most importantly it will teach each child that reading can be incredibly fun and rewarding throughout his/her whole life.

Writer’s Workshop Fear writing no longer! This class is designed to give students the skills needed to become successful writers in an engaging and exciting setting. Utilizing the Six-Traits writing technique, students will be guided through the writing process in multiple genres. Students will be given the tools they need to improve their grades and increase standardized test scores. Each class will allow for one-on- one instruction as well as whole-group feedback.
