Olive groves, ice grottoes and ancient mosaics The Ananzoe spa within Starwood’s Romanos resort in Greece combines ancient traditions with contemporary chic
Nestled amidst lush olive groves in the Messinia region on Greece’s southwest Peloponnese coast is Te Romanos, a Luxury Collection resort. Owned by Starwood Hotels and Resorts, one of its standout features is the 4,000sqm Ananzoe spa which combines ancient Greek influences with modern concepts in both its design and treatments menu. Te interiors, created by MKV Design, celebrate the rich heritage of the Peloponnese region alongside contemporary furniture and fittings. Te aesthetic was also inspired by the history and architectural inheritance of Messinia: one of the focal points is a range of stunning mosaics created by two Italian companies, Sicis and Bisazza, inspired by the patterns found at Nestor’s Palace, built in the Mycenaean era. Facilities include a floating pool, ice grotto rooms and herbal saunas. Tere is a range of unique signature olive oil Oleotherapy treatments, which also originated at Nestor’s Palace and use protocols dating back to Homeric times.

Radiating heat
More sculpture than radiator, Italian heating expert I-Radium uses infrared technology for its new range of wall mounted designs. Morphosis, designed by Michael Schmidt, uses a patented infrared technology which warms surrounding objects directly through infrared energy. Sean McGran, I-Radium’s distributor, explains: “When infrared waves touch a surface, heat energy is released which is either absorbed by that object or reflected. Tere is no loss of energy and no humidity in the air.” Te economic and environmental benefits are significant, continues McGran: “It warms a room more quickly than conventional equivalents, preventing energy wastage.” Less dust movement is another benefit; relevant for asthmatic and respiratory health conditions. Te design, which can be displayed vertically or horizontally, uses wood from sustainable sources and is available in ebony, wenge and four oak shades – natural, grey, black and white. It also doubles up as a towel warmer.
