Distillerie De Pézenas is the latest boutique hotel and spa in the growing portfolio of the Garrigae Group. Established in 2003 by locals Cécile and Miguel Espada, the group renovates monasteries, wine estates, abbeys and chateaux into hotels and private villa complexes, all with spas.
It recently turned its attention to the 18th century former wine distillery in the town of Pézenas. The property opened in May 2012 and comprises 50 bedrooms, suites and apartments, plus a bijoux spa focussing on wellness. Says Michelle Seguin, Spa Manager for Garrigae: “The Garrigae group specialises in a holistic approach to health and wellness. Our group uses practitioners who understand that deep, long lasting healing comes from addressing the clients’ needs on three levels: emotional, physical and spiritual.” A minimalistic grey and red décor sets the backdrop to two treatment rooms, a hammam and a whirlpool that began its life as a wine

fermentation tank. “We’re striving for an uncomplicated, natural setting for treatments that are tailor-made to clients’ needs,” says the hotel’s Spa Manager, Michelle Seguin. The spa offers a bespoke range of handmade products, called Garrigae, which have been five years in the making by a local pharmacist. They use Mediterranean compounds and ingredients from sustainable resources, many from sites owned by Garrigae’s President, Miguel Espada. All the products are based around one beauty balm, a blend of grapeseed oil and olive oil, made using organic olives from a nearby estate. The therapist adds local essential oils, the combination depending upon the treatment. “Our Kansu Bowl massage using olive and grapeseed oils is proving to be the most popular among our guests,” says Seguin. The range will be available for general sale in 2013. Currently, the spa has a 35 per cent capture rate for hotel clients but sees a higher rate of day guests, and it has a healthy 50/50 balance of domestic and international visitors. Plans include further treatments, and a fitness centre for 2013.
