NEW FRONTIERS D 8

r Elissa Epel gave one of the most thought-provoking presentations at this year’s Global Spa & Wellness Summit, introducing the microscopic world of telomeres. In future, these protective ‘caps’ on the end of our chromosomes could serve as powerful predictors of our biological age. According to Dr Epel, who is conducting ongoing pioneering research with Nobel Laureate in Medicine Dr Elizabeth Blackburn, telomeres measurably shorten when the body is exposed to an unhealthy lifestyle or chronic stress. Understanding how to safeguard our health by monitoring our telomeres could be the holy grail of anti-ageing and preventative health. Read more highlights from the Summit on p28. From micro to macro, Founder of Six Senses Resorts & Spas and CEO of Soneva, Sonu Shivdasani, highlights the world’s growing water crisis. Today, nearly one billion people in the world do not have access to clean drinking water. He announces THE-Water Campaign to ES readers on p98. This new global initiative is a call to action for everyone in the hospitality and spa industry. Elsewhere in this issue, we visit Rockliffe Hall in north-east England

and fi nd out how, two years from opening, Spa Director Liz Holmes is building her business (p38). We take design inspiration from a tour through some of the best gardens unveiled at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London (p46). And fi nally, for those all important fi nishing touches, our Expert Guide to Hands and Feet (p67), showcases some of the best luxury nail services for spas. Have a great summer and, as always, we hope you enjoy this issue.
