But Holmes is not afraid to discount spa days to push volume into quieter periods. “We run promotions throughout the year with seasonal promotions, which tend to drive the end of the month sales. In January, for example, we run Divine Detox which is then replaced with Spring Splendour, and so on.”


Get active


Holmes relishes the opportunity to get guests moving. “We’ve created a well integrated programme so that gym activities link seamlessly with our spa treatment offering,” she reveals. “We’re constantly adding new activities to the menu, including Peter Cohen’s Weight Loss programme and our physiotherapist programmes, dedicated to back health and gait analysis. “Our Nordic walking programmes take groups


around the beautiful River Tees and the surrounding area and classes include Pilates, Zumba, Latin dance, yoga, meditation, studio cycling and weight training. I even run my own class, called Retro Step, where 40-somethings can re-live their youth with disco moves from the 80’s and 90’s. It’s self indulgent of me, but a lot of fun!”


Expert team Recognition and appreciation of her team’s individual talents has lead to some interesting ideas. “We are fortunate to have a varied team of experts and this gives us the ability to specialise,” confi rms Holmes. “For instance, our Treatments Manager, Victoria Lees, used to be part of the Daniel Sandler makeup team, so she has great photographic and

wedding makeup expertise. Assistant Treatment Manager Karen Jennings also brings another dimension to the spa offering. “Karen delivers amazing holistic treatments including refl exology, Hopi ear candles and Indian head massage,” says Holmes. “Thanks to her talents, we’ve created our own signature treatments such as Body Bliss, which combines ayurveda, Indian head massage and refl exology using hot poultices on the chakra points. “Karen has also completed a course on palliative


care. One in four people are affected by cancer at some time in their lives and many spas cannot offer treatments to people in this situation. We wanted to fi nd a way to make our spa available to them. If there’s ever a time in your life when you need touch, this is it. With this in mind, we’ve developed a Recovery Retreat spa break. We talk to the person in advance about how they’re affected by cancer, what medical treatments they’re on and we look at ways in which we can adjust our treatment protocols to suit their needs.”
