We love the integrated health approach with the vitamin supplements, smoothie recipes, books and lifestyle training. The fi tness team has become really involved in the launch and our managers appreciate the commerciality of Murad and its commitment to developing home spa programmes,” adds Holmes.

Product partner selection and ongoing training are vital to the spa’s success, says Holmes. “We selected [comfort zone] to be our main product house as we love the style and quality of its products and treatments. The Tranquility oil fragrance permeates the treatment suite and is used in the Tranquility Welcome Foot Ritual which starts every [comfort zone] treatment we offer. Sacred Nature is [comfort zone]’s certifi ed organic range with holistic rituals, which our guests and members have fallen in love with. “We use Mama Mio pregnancy treatments and
products, but the visible difference they make to the skin has ensured that its Bootcamp treatments and retail lines also do well for us. We love the quirky product names, such as Boob Tube and Get Waisted. “Our chosen makeup line is Daniel Sandler, and he often comes up to do demonstrations at our spa evening events. For nails we have Leighton Denny and Shellac. Shellac is fantastic for spas – you can have your nails done and jump straight into the pool. “More recently, we’ve taken on Murad to complete our offer, which refl ects our consumers’ demand for more prescriptive, problem solving skin care.
Rockliffe is a shining example of how a hotel spa can really drive occupancy, reputation and an enviable return on investment. “We were all confi dent at the launch that the spa would play a very big role in the success of the whole resort, but it has exceeded our owner’s expectations in terms of contribution,” reveals Holmes. “As a resort, our gross turnover was £10 million for our second fi nancial year and the spa was responsible for 20 per cent of this revenue, so we are grossing £2 million in spa spread. “We’re selling the whole experience at Rockliffe, which has been a great success,” she adds. “Hotels should never underestimate the potential of the spa business in its own right. They need to set their management structure so that someone is driving that revenue and profi tability.” Looking to the future, Liz Holmes has endless ideas to ensure Rockliffe Spa continues to grow and fl ourish. “We’re just scratching the surface,” she says. “The demand for packages that really deliver lifestyle solutions and preventative wellness is growing. We’re very keen to add this dimension to Rockliffe Spa but we’re also mindful that we’re at the luxury end of the spa spectrum. People come to Rockliffe to celebrate, so our offering needs to be fun as well.”
