RETAIL FOCUS  FRONTLINE

From the Frontline

This month Infinite Field Marketing has visited 250 stores across the UK to gather real ‘grass roots’ feedback and opinion on the best selling products in-store and the issues affecting the industry...

PRICES LEAD IN A ‘CONFUSING’ MARKET

ONE OF the recurring comments made to our market researchers this month has been that there are too many laptop models on the market, making it difficult for the customer to choose between the various devices. The interesting point that this raises is that in such a marketplace, the choice seems to inevitably come down to price. This seems to be reflected in this month’s sales chart for the laptop category. Leading the table is the Toshiba Satellite C650, an entry level model with a fairly respectable spec sheet – it usually carries an AMD V120 processor with one GB of RAM and 250GB of storage and can be found for as little as £335. Some of the other entries – the HP G62, the Sony Vaio and the Dell Inspiron 1545 – have all made previous entries in to our top sellers chart. It is tempting to suggest that these devices have benefitted from a strong brand. Most of these models have had a TV advertising campaign behind them and every one comes from a prominent US or Japanese vendor. In a market that is increasing its reach

beyond traditional boundaries, it is perhaps unsurprising that the most recongnisable brands are performing well. Many of those who are new to computers might not understand the benefits of increased bus speeds, but they will recognise certain brands – and buy accordingly. This is the real challenge of today’s

market, and it’s something that many retailers will have heard or observed before. The customer must recognise the value of a purchase, or they will simply go for the safest or cheapest option. matt.grainger@intentmedia.co.uk
