Storage Resource Management
ILM Enabling Technologies
Global name space:
A complete ILM solution requires some type of virtualized storage.
A global file system name space abstracts the presentation of data
to users and applications from the physical storage.
This abstraction layer lets administrator’s change the location of
data without having to update every application or notify users.
Transparent data movement:
ILM automated data movement that is transparent to users and
applications.
Automated provisioning:
Allows administrators to configure policies that automatically
allocate storage resources to applications. This capability requires
the ability to classify storage resources based on QoS.
Policy engine:
Administrators must be able to set policies that determine when
and where data is migrated.
Discovery and classification:
Administrators need tools that capture information about file
locations, applications, information content, usage patterns, and
subjective value.
These building blocks can also serve as standalone solutions that provide
significant short-term benefits and results.
The first step is to analyze your environment, determine your priorities, and
develop the business-driven policies and processes that will provide the real
“intelligence” for the solution
That’s the sixth, and most important piece of the puzzle.
