Tiers of Storage - Locations
• Access options:
– Online (Tier 1)
– Nearline (Tier 2)
– Offline (Tier 3)
• Site locations:
–Primary site
• Disk to Disk (Online Accessible)
• Disk to Tape (Nearline Accessible)
– Secondary site
• Disk to Disk (Online Accessible)
• Disk to Tape (Offline Accessible)
With locations, we typically talked about on-line, near-line and off-line.
On-line
The media is accessible and the data is usable.
This is typically in a disk based format that is already mounted.
Near-line
Typically means that the media is accessible or available but the data
has to be recovered.
This would be like an onsite tape or data that is on a virtual tape library.
Off-line
Typically means that the media has to be recovered before we can
recover the data.
This would be like offsite tape storage.
