LUN Masking & Mapping
LUN Mapping and Masking
• LUN mapping and LUN masking restrict access to a
specific LUN or groups of LUNs
• Fine-grained approach but more complex
• Complementary to zoning

LUN mapping and LUN masking restrict access at the disk level:
On a SCSI bus, each physical disk on the bus is identified by a unique
Logical Unit Number (LUN).
On a Fibre Channel network, logical units can include multiple disks, and
logical unit numbers can often be arbitrarily assigned by the subsystem
controller.
On a SCSI bus, each LUN refers to a physical disk. On a Fibre Channel
network, the subsystem can “virtualize” volumes so that each LUN can
consist of multiple physical disks. The host, however, still thinks that
each LUN represents a single physical disk.
LUN mapping and LUN masking control access to LUNs by, respectively,
“assigning” LUNs to specific hosts and “hiding” LUNs from specific hosts.
