EAST OF SOHO

POST

A GRAVITATIONAL PULL

In the same year as Harbor’s arrival, leading commercials facility The Electric Theatre Company (ETC) set-up shop in Whitechapel, following other heavyweight commercials post houses Eastwards, including Time Based Arts, Framestore and Untold.

Harbor have three floors in the Turnmills Building in Farringdon

Leading live production specialist NEP moved in to the ITN building in Gray’s Inn Road, taking advantage of a technical set-up devised for news coverage. It will share the location with ITN Production Services which is celebrating its tenth year in the iconic building’s Farringdon basement.

Harbor Picture Company had been looking to find a central London location since 2019, eyeing up something with quite a large footprint. Soho wasn’t on the table. “From the get-go, we felt like it was time to do something different,” says James Corless, Commercial Director for Harbor. “We spoke to our clients, but we didn’t really know what the wider industry was doing.” In 2021, they joined a sister company in Farringdon’s Turnmills building, transforming three floors. So, it was a surprise to find Company3, Milk and Residence Pictures round the corner. “It felt like a happy accident,” says Corless.

But it’s no accident that there are a string of production companies nearby, including high profile drama indies Sister Pictures, Kudos and The Forge. In the unscripted sphere, 72 Films, Keo Films and Zig Zag Productions are all in the zone.

For ETC, the move followed research into finding somewhere accessible for staff and where clients were located. With around half of the Televisual Commercials 30, including Biscuit, Riff Raff, Somesuch and Iconoclast now based East of Soho, it’s likely for ETC that several clients are now just a saunter away.

The same is true for Freefolk and Black Kite Studios. Until 2023, Freefolk (formerly Finish VFX) had been in Soho for 20 years. “Over that time the area has gone from a world renowned collective advertising hub to an area focused on attracting tourism,” says Jason Watts creative director at
