THE WATERSHED MOMENT
But the East has been exerting its pull more keenly on the post sector in the last five years. Looking back, you can see a watershed moment – in 2018 - when Untold Studios launched at The White Collar Factory building in Old Street and Framestore moved to Chancery Lane.

their new home in The Skipper Building, a former tobacco factory in Farringdon, is open all areas. “We’ve got a lift, access, wide doors,” says Cara Kotschy, co-founder and md of Residence, “just the space that we need.” Coffee + TV has 70 full time artists, while Residence is growing “at a rate of knots,” says Kotschy. There’s room on Clerkenwell Road to develop into the basement.
Of course, Soho also features its share of basement opportunities, as part of its continual reinvention. Recently, there’s been the new Warner Bros De Lane Lea epic new base on Greek Street and Molinare’s imaginative excavation below street level as the facility keeps growing.
The extension of the postproduction firmament to Noho added another centre of gravity North of Oxford Street, which encompasses Picture Shop’s four bases in the same vicinity as Unit continues to grow, now taking on a fifth floor in Berner’s Mews. While Envy, Clear Cut, Suite, Run VT and The Mill are part of a thriving community, not much more than a stone’s throw from the BBC’s New Broadcasting House.

Before the 2018 move to its nine-floor, 100,000 sq ft space in Holborn, Framestore had been in Soho for over thirty years. Founder William Sargent, pictured in Televisual standing on the rooftop terrace, with a backdrop of gothic minarets and the London Eye in the distance, saw the move as a natural evolution in response to changing client needs, with work expanding into new areas, such as VR and AR, increasingly needing space for multi- disciplined projects, and the client base widening outside of Soho. Post Covid, with widespread use of remote technology, Sargent’s rationale has been
given wings. Framestore merged with Company3 in
2020. At the time, Company3 was reaching the end of its Soho lease. It saw the Holborn light. “We needed space to build sound studios and big grading theatres and we were really struggling to find something,” says Company3 director of episodic operations Johnny Whitehead. “We walked into this building and there was this enormous ground floor space, with double height ceilings.”

While everyone’s plans went on hold in March 2020, moves to the East were only halted for a year, with several arrivals in 2021, including Rascal Post in Shoreditch.
