STUDIO BUILDS AND EXPANSION
March ‘23 Wycombe Film Studios, designed and operated by Stage Fifty, given full planning permission for its eight stage complex. Garden Studios, Anna Valley partner to set up a new virtual production studio in central London. Cube Studio a 6,500 square- foot virtual production studio in Berkshire to open in April.

Prime and a production base for Netflix. The two streamers will occupy all of the space created by Shepperton’s £500m, 17 stage, expansion, due to complete this summer. As well as its base at Shepperton, Netflix also
has a long-term lease on Longcross Studios; and the streamer has reportedly been planning to take more space at Enfield, North London. Meanwhile, Apple TV + has taken space at Aston Clinton studios in Aylesbury; last year it was using the studio for Hijack, starring Idris Elba. But there’s still plenty of demand from streamers.
At Space Studios in Manchester, managing director Rob Page says: “The fact that the streamers have tied up space elsewhere doesn’t deter them from filming in the nations and regions. We definitely see that demand still coming through…. We all benefit.” In Bristol, The Bottle Yard Studios has opened its
new facility TBY2 and Aria Studios in North Wales, opened last year, with a 20,000 sq ft stage. Other new studios include RD Studios in Park Royal, West London, with 45,000 sq ft of space. Shinfield Studios, near Reading, has been
gradually coming online and will offer 18 stages, by the end of 2023. “It’s the first brand new, purpose- built studio development in the UK of scale in a very long time,” says Nick Smith, joint managing director. A big US drama went straight into new stages
opened in February. Smith is realistic about demand. He’s not alone in
feeling that levels will be sustained, but budgets will be squeezed. “It’s still going to happen. But it’s got to happen at a price point where it makes commercial sense.” Sky Studios Elstree comes online over the next
few months and has already welcomed its first production, feature film Wicked. The complex will have 13 sound stages and it’s already plotting to expand by a further ten. Created for Sky owners Comcast, Sky Studios

Feb ‘23 FulwellCain Studios, a JV between Fulwell 73 and Cain International, announces plans for Crown Works Studios in Sunderland. Pinewood Studios gets permission for a 1.4million sq ft expansion, including 21 sound stages and an education and training hub, set to be the biggest studio complex in the world. Great Point Seren Studios announces the construction of a virtual production hub in Cardiff, a collaboration between Great Point Media, Fields Park and US-based Volume Global.
Jan ‘23 Aria Studios, in Snowdonia, Wales, opens with a 20,000 sq ft film and TV studio and a training academy. Sky Studios Elstree recruits first cohort of 12 school leavers for the Sky Content Academy with placements on the new film adaptation of Wicked.
