IT’S SPRINGTIME AGAIN, BUT IS THERE A CHILL IN THE AIR? Spring has sprung and traditionally it’s a time for fresh new growth. But worries about the wider economy, a cost-of-living crisis, the invasion of Ukraine and successive government flip flops are adding up to an uncertain mood in the country as a whole, and in the TV and film market too. But while there’s concern, there’s also a great deal of confidence that the UK


can continue to be the home of much of the world’s big budget production that has fuelled the sector’s incredible growth of the past few years. The UK film and high-end TV studios business is certainly forging ahead.


This issue, we take a look at that market and find that there’s no slowdown in the number of established operators expanding their footprints, and new entrants pushing on with plans for new builds. One sector hoping that confidence is justified is the London post market.


This issue we look at how a chunk of the London post scene has made a sideways shift. While London post is still rooted in Soho and Noho, many have travelled east in search of new hunting grounds, particularly those focused on high-end TV, features and commercials. Commercials production is, of course, the focus of our annual Commercials


30 survey. In the survey, producers discuss a 2022 that was at times both frenetically busy and deathly quiet. Client confidence seemed to wane at the tail end of the year, the hope is that it has a resurgence in 2023 and bold, ambitious and creative solutions can come to the fore again. This time we also focus in on advances in production and post technology.


Firstly, with a look at visualisation, the problem-solving pre-production stage that is becoming more crucial, and varied, than ever. New advances in post tech, including AI and machine learning, are the subject of our roundtable discussion and we also look at post’s efforts to connect with colleges to ensure the audio post talent pipeline keeps flowing. The sector’s carbon footprint is also a feature this time as while TV and film


has made great strides to lessen its carbon footprint in production, the elephant in the room is the increase in data it generates, and the environmental cost of storing it all in the cloud. With summer around the corner, it’s also a good time to spotlight sport and


live event TV and the ways producers and broadcasters are finding ever more ways to engage viewers in the here and now. All this great content has to be shot on something, and this issue we introduce our 17th annual Top 10 Cameras survey. What will be this year’s top model?
