loadouts, pickups, and surplus rigging.” “I think it’s a bit of a misnomer to only call it
previs,” says Miles Perkins, Industry Manager, Film & Television at Epic Games. “We’ve recently entered into the age of real time - these visualisations can now have a 1-to-1 relationship with the real world, conveying accurate spatial information that can help filmmakers make decisions. With real-time, because you’re visualising it in a way that can be accurate to the real world, you can be engaging with the cinematographer with virtual cameras in pre-production, getting something close to what it will look like in real life.” Previs is no longer “greyscale 3D characters doing
bad animation in unfinished greyscale sets” to the mystification of some producers and showrunners, according to Dan May, VFX art director and previs supervisor of Painting Practice. “Our benchmark previs now is like a game cinematic, and it’s done in a very short space of time. We can up the ante on the animation, we can push the look and we can add a bit more [simulation] with lenses. But underneath the good-looking renders of Unreal is the technical accuracy, which you still need.”
The Third Floor will use motion capture to rapidly
block the character action in a previs shot. “A team can quickly move through walk-and-talk coverage in an environment, and then lean on previs keyframe animation for any complex action that is needed in the scene,’ says Ristich. Painting Practice is also exploring mocap, as well
as using “really accessible” virtual studio environments in which a director and DoP can ‘walk through’ and develop shots. “That’s been huge,” says May.
