Soft launch success for Angry Birds World

T

he world’s first Angry Birds World entertainment park has opened its doors to the public in Qatar, and invited guests into their nest to explore the newly built indoor section in line with the first phase of its launch.

The park offers a number of attractions inspired by Angry Birds gameplay, such as the 11m free-fall

Blast Bomb - a drop and twist tower, manufactured by I.E. Park, who also designed Red Alert where visitors are hurled into an exhilarating 360-degree spin. The Angry Bird’s World interior has been themed entirely by Rocas & Design, who also designed

one of the park’s most unique attractions – Big Tree. Standing at 17m, the enchanting structure will draw both children and adults into a fun, interactive experience, where they would learn the basics of science, improve their musical ability and develop their creative chops through a variety of edutainment offerings. For adventure junkies, the tree also houses “Own the Sky”, a Walltopia Rollglider featuring a 106m zip line that allows participants to cut through the air at rip-roaring speeds. Additionally, visitors can also test their physical strength with the “Fierce Flight” ropes course challenge. “Angry Birds World is one of the most successful entertainment projects in the Middle East, and

Rocas & Design was awarded as the unique theming contractor for the whole project, which includes three more parks to be opened very soon.” commented Javier Ramón-Murcia, CEO of Rocas & Design. “We are extremely proud to have offered our turn-key project approach to such a great FEC.”

A towering debut for the Orlando StarFlyer

Opened in June on Orlando’s International Drive, the new $10m Orlando StarFlyer from Funtime is the world’s tallest swing ride, standing at 450 feet. 24 guests can ride the StarFlyer, which rotates up and down at speeds up to 45mph. The Starflyer arrived from Austria in 28 40-foot shipping

containers and required 1000 tons of steel, 6000 feet of steel cables, 8000 feet of electrical cables, 110,000 bolts and was all built on site. The foundation required 1400 cubic yards of concrete, 75 tons of steel, is 88 feet in diameter – with the concrete was poured continuously for 8 hours from midnight to avoid the heat and traffic. Less than a mile to the north on International Drive, a smaller

230 foot StarFlyer operates at Magical Midway, and the bravest riders will be able to spot each ride from the other!

Budget double-up for Universal Studios’ Beijing investment

Universal Beijing Resort is bumping up the budget for the upcoming 300-acre theme park, taking the estimated total from $3.25b to $6.5b. Initially announced in October 2014 by Universal Parks & Resorts, the park is aiming for a 2021

opening. The new surge in investment is the result of the recent success of Shanghai Disney Resort which drew over 11m visitors in 2017, and added Disney Pixar Toy Story Land in recent months. In addition to new retail and entertainment facilities, work is underway at Universal Beijing to

incorporate new zones, such as a Harry Potter themed area, and new attractions themed around Minions, Transformers, and Kung Fu Panda. Additionally, executives have confirmed that Fast and Furious – Supercharged, a new addition at Universal Studios Florida, will also be coming to Beijing.
