Neuroprotection with CBD N
Neuroprotection is a growing area of interest in the scientific and medical communities. But what is it exactly? And is CBD the key to this new health frontier? Linnea provides natural pharmaceutical solutions and reveals how CBD can delay disease progression in a model of Parkinson’s.
europrotection is a term that describes any strategy to protect the brain, especially its neuronal structure. Neuroprotective agents prevent the impairment of neuronal functions by acting on early expressions of degenerative processes, such as inflammation, immune dysregulation, cell death, oxidative stress, and neurotransmitter release. That translates into potential health benefits, making them a powerful potential resource when it comes to combatting a long list of neurodegenerative disorders and diseases, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and glaucoma.
Studies suggest that neuroprotection strategies may be a fundamental way to safeguard the nervous system, especially for those who have been injured or who have developed a neurological condition. It is interesting to note, however, that neuroprotectors benefit the body, not through the reversal of existing damage, but primarily by slowing cellular degeneration and eventual apoptosis (programmed cell death). Although all degeneration eventually leads to neuronal death, the pathways to get there vary and their causes and mechanisms are not always clear to scientists and physicians who use the umbrella term ‘neuroinflammation’ to encompass all these damaging processes.
Neuroinflammation
Inflammation is a physiological response used by the body to defend itself from damage or external attacks, such as stress, toxin overload, a poor diet, and major triggers like traumatic injuries or ischemia. When the trigger is prolonged, inflammation may degenerate, activating destructive processes that can lead to neuronal death. One of the most popular ways to combat these harmful processes and to promote good health is a healthy lifestyle, combined with powerful, safe,

as a ground-breaking candidate for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, confirming existing data in humans and paving the way for further clinical studies to underline CBD’s effects on motor symptoms, beyond its neuroprotective power. The goal, ultimately, is to create a strategy to simultaneously treat and prevent the same disease with one single ingredient. It’s quite an impressive finding, especially considering that current options only address the symptoms (but not the cause) of Parkinson’s.

natural compounds, like CBD, and their man-made equivalents.
CBD against Parkinson’s disease Cannabis is widely used to treat the non- motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The current lack of regulation in many countries has favoured self-administration and a poor understanding of the real potential of this plant. Cannabidiol (CBD), the main non-intoxicating cannabinoid present in cannabis, has significant anti-inflammatory properties, and a recent study conducted by Linnea has highlighted its neuroprotective benefits in relation to the progression of Parkinson’s disease.
Published in July 2021, the study evaluated how long-term CBD administration affects disease progression in a classic toxin-based animal model of Parkinson’s disease. Animals treated with CBD showed a reduction of nigrostriatal degeneration (the cardinal neuropathological feature of Parkinson’s disease) accompanied by improved motor function. In particular, CBD enhanced the endogenous neuroprotective response of ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), thereby preventing neurodegeneration and inducing the recovery of motor performance. These findings place CBD
A wide range of applications Given its wide spectrum of biological activity, and lack of psychotropic effects, CBD has also been extensively studied in laboratories around the world as a treatment for other diseases associated with redox imbalance and inflammation, such as diabetes, diabetes-related cardiomyopathy, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, arthritis, anxiety, epilepsy and skin disease. Moreover, a favourable balance in homeostatic responses is essential to maintaining brain function in normal ageing, not just in the treatment of disease, which makes CBD interesting to all consumers, regardless of age or current therapeutic needs
Quality first
When choosing a potential CBD product to treat and prevent medical conditions, quality is of utmost importance, which is precisely why Linnea is committed to excellence – ensuring the safety and standardisation of all its botanical compounds through a rigorous seven- step quality process.
