Company insight

Sustainable dairy production

Uelzena Group is a dairy cooperative with four production plants and two sales units located in Northern Germany. As a milk specialist in the food industry, Uelzena produces milk-based ingredients like skimmed milk powder, butter, concentrated butter (AMF), sweetened condensed milk and cream.

A

ll Uelzena ingredients are produced directly from fresh milk or cream – free from any food additives – and are naturally clean label products. The company sources the majority of its raw material milk from its own contract milk producers in Northern Germany. This means short transport routes and guarantees both the availability and highest quality of the raw ingredient. It also means Uelzena knows exactly where its milk comes from, as well as the best conditions for the production of high- quality milk ingredients.

The carbon footprint of Uelzena milk producers is better than the average for Germany as a whole. This is what the initial results of a pilot project suggest, in which climate balances were drawn up for some of Uelzena‘s milk producers. There are many reasons for this: for example, healthy and long-life cows with a high milk yield, a good quality of basic fodder, and a low proportion of imported soya without a sustainability certificate regarding feed concentrates. But also, the gas-tight storage of farm manure, the use of biogas

plants and other renewable energies, as well as energy-saving milking technology, all have a positive influence on the climate balance of milk.

Sustainable milk production The milk for the production of the dairy ingredients is delivered fresh every day to the four plant sites of the Uelzena Ingredients business unit. In order to realise savings in greenhouse gas emissions along the value chain, the company pays attention to transporting the raw milk from the producer farms to the Uelzena plant sites in a way that saves as many resources as possible. For example, some of the milk collection vehicles at Uelzena’s member dairies have been equipped with battery- powered electric pumps that charge during the journey.

Sales volumes for Uelzena’s skimmed milk powder reached a new record of 86,000 tonnes.

This means that no emissions are produced when the milk is pumped out of the tanks, and fuel consumption is significantly reduced. The continuous optimisation of route planning also minimises the distances travelled.

Furthermore, the installation of an instrument to analyse driving behaviour and fuel consumption supports a vehicle-friendly and more fuel-efficient driving style, as does the use of ECO mode in new tractors. In their cheese production facility in Bismark, Uelzena produces GMO-free cheese from VLOG-compliant raw milk. To make this possible, many milk producers of Uelzena‘s milk collection cooperatives have changed their feeding and refrain from using genetically modified feed. The VLOG- certified raw milk comes from sustainable, regional production within a radius of 150km from the production site. All stages of cheese processing are carried out without genetic engineering.

Milk specialists and reliable partners In 2020, milk deliveries to the production facilities of the Uelzena increased again, as in the previous year. A total of almost 687 million kg was processed into dairy ingredients. The majority of the volume is sold in the Uelzena Ingredients business unit to customers in the international food, chocolate and confectionery industry. Uelzena recorded an increase in sales of almost 1,700 tonnes in milk powder, its best-selling product group, despite the Covid-related turbulence in the sales markets. Sales volumes for skimmed milk powder and buttermilk powder reached a new record total of 86,000 tonnes. Milk fats are the company’s second main product group behind milk powder. In 2020, Uelzena supplied 48,597 tonnes of butter and anhydrous milk fat to the European and international confectionery, bakery and food industries, which makes them one of the largest dairy producers across Europe. ●
