Avocados join the fight against osteoarthritis
The market for joint health products continues to grow each year. Bioriginal has found a natural, sustainable way of contributing to the market in the form of AvoVida, a plant-based joint pain relief solution that comes from avocado oils.

n recent years, the world has turned towards nutritional solutions targeted at health and wellness. With a surge in ageing population worldwide, one of the main health concerns has been maintaining joint health. This, coupled with the emphasis Covid-19, has laid on the importance of health and nutrition and led to a preference for natural, plant- based and sustainable solutions. The market for joint health products is set to grow by 6.6% year-on-year from 2019 to 2024. While animal-derived options are common in the market – namely collagen, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate – there is scope for a “greener” plant-based product in the form of Bioriginal’s uniquely branded AvoVida. AvoVida is a mixture of an unsaponifiable layer of fats extracted from avocado and soya in a one to two ratio. Scientific studies done on this combination of phytosterols has shown that there are proven benefits in reducing localised osteoarthritis (OA) inflammation. It is also important to note that phytosterols cannot be inherently produced by the human body, as with cholesterol, and have to be obtained through
balanced nutrition and the intake of supplements.
Sustainable alternatives Unlike its animal-derived counterparts, AvoVida is a vegan and non-GMO product that is manufactured using minimal processing. Bioriginal uses upcycling, whereby the starting material is taken from leftover flesh from the avocado kernels, which are an industry by-product. The avocado kernels and soya beans are mechanically pressed to remove the oil fraction. The latter then undergoes an alkali saponification treatment in order to extract the unsaponifiable layer. The phytosterols fractions are standardised in a 1:2 ratio and this blend

Avocado pain relief PGE2 is a signalling molecule involved in inflammation and pain, and a decrease in PGE2 usually also leads an increase in COX2 inhibitors.
High levels of COX2 inhibitors in the human body are known to increase the incidence of strokes and heart attacks. AvoVida, however, leads to the decrease of PGE2, without impacting the COX2 pathway.

is then spray dried into a powder. AvoVida consists of 30% phytosterols. These specific phytosterols are mainly campersterol, beta- sitosterol and stigmasterol. Scientific studies have shown that AvoVida leads to decreased inflammation through the inhibition of interleukins (which are by nature pro- inflammatory). Through five conducted clinical trials, AvoVida has shown to decrease the
