mega-3s are among the most studied nutrients on the planet. The health benefits associated with daily omega-3 intake are very well documented, and include cardiovascular health, improved cognitive and brain function, and eye health. Until recently, the delivery method for these nutrients via supplement was limited to soft gel capsules and liquid pourables. All the while, nutrition delivery categories in the lifestyle and convenience markets – such as protein bars, sports drinks, and flavoured stick packs – have been growing in popularity.
Overcoming challenges So, why aren’t high EPA and DHA fish oil concentrates available in more forms? The explanation is relatively simple, according to the vice president of product and process at Wiley Companies, Dr. Andrew Bell. “Most formulators are familiar with the challenges of including omega-3 oils into convenience products,” he explains. “Liquid oils don’t mix well with water-based systems. In food matrixes, the oil is difficult to formulate with if it is not protected from exposure to oxygen or high heat.”

AlaskOmega, produced by Wiley Companies, widens the scope of omega-3s to include an omega-3 concentrate powder that allows this vital nutrient to be used in a more diverse way. This opens a wealth of new product opportunities for increasingly health-conscious consumers.
AlaskOmega powder can be used in a range of applications and convenience products, such as protein bars and sports drinks.
“Among our AlaskOmega brand values has always been our oil freshness and flavour, and our powder needed to align with our global reputation,” says AlaskOmega’s SVP of global ingredients sales, Steve Dillingham. And align it does. AlaskOmega’s omega-3 powder delivers over 200mg/g EPA and DHA without a fishy taste. Plus, the oil used to make this powder has a maximum total
“To increase awareness of these essential nutrients [...]it was critical that we produced a powder that was of the highest quality and the most optimal sensory experience, and we have accomplished this.”

As with supplements, oxidating is an issue for foods and beverages, and fortifying a snack bar, for example, has historically been very challenging. That’s until now. AlaskOmega’s omega-3 powder allows formulators to incorporate high levels of omega-3s into a variety of applications and formulations that would not typically be amenable to utilising liquid ingredients.

oxidation (TOTOX) limit of five, more than a five-fold reduction from the Global Organisation for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) TOTOX limit of 26.
A boost to consumption So, why was it so important for AlaskOmega to research and develop this powder? The European Food Safety
Authority and WHO have recommended adults and children over four years of age consume at least 250mg of EPA and DHA omega-3 per day, and that few Europeans are meeting this minimum recommendation from their diet. Therefore, including AlaskOmega powder in convenience foods is an easy step towards improving omega-3 nutrition and public health across Europe. Furthermore, many athletes are seeking convenient ways to augment their EPA and DHA omega-3 intake. “As it is a key objective of AlaskOmega to increase awareness of these essential nutrients and contribute to a healthier global population, it was critical that we produced a powder that was of the highest quality and the most optimal sensory experience, and we have accomplished this,” says Dillingham. AlaskOmega is sending samples of this powder to formulators around the world. Dillingham adds, “We’re excited about what this revolutionary product has done for our industry and [...] that it has introduced omega-3 nutrients to an entirely new group of consumers.” ●
