Company insight

uromed’s new line of wellbeing solutions includes lemon (Wellemon) and Spinach (Spisar), which now join fig, artichoke, olive and pomegranate extracts, broadening the health applications concerning healthy ageing and wellbeing, as inspired by the Mediterranean diet. As all the other ingredients of this line,

Wellemon and Spisar are obtained from a quality controlled, transparent, and sustainable local supply chain. They are also processed with the eco-friendly Pure Hydro Process, a proprietary extraction technology that uses purified water as solvent. This technology preserves and concentrates the natural ingredients of the botanicals without any impurity from residual volatile solvents.

When life gives you lemons… Wellemon, a natural extract from lemon fruits (Citrus limon), provides a practical and efficient approach to resolve the low solubility and bioavailability of citrus flavanones, such as hesperidin. Citrus flavanones are well substantiated by scientific studies and indicated for multiple applications, particularly cardiovascular, metabolic, cosmetic and venotonic support. Their health properties are modulated by how efficiently gut bacteria hydrolyze flavanone glycosides, to make them bioavailable. However, the low solubility of hesperidin and most citrus flavanones hampers their microbial metabolism and bioavailability, yielding a high inter- individual variability (high vs. low- producers) that prevents consistent health-beneficial effects. Wellemon achieves a high bioavailability naturally, with low dosage and without altering the chemical structure of the flavanones. A clinical study demonstrated that the lemon flavanone eriocitrin, administered through the intake of Wellemon, provides a higher threshold for metabolite levels than hesperidin, which was administered from an

orange extract. In particular, the pharmacokinetic study showed, for the first time with human volunteers, that intake of eriocitrin from Wellemon yields both lemon and orange metabolites.

The improved quantity and availability of metabolites, according to the authors of the published study, is likely to be sufficient enough to exert health benefits even in low-producer individuals, reducing interindividual variability and overcoming hesperidin low bioavailability. While no major physiological changes were expected in the acute study, remarkably, systolic blood pressure increased after the high-fat-high-sugar meal when volunteers ingested the orange extract, but not after consuming Wellemon. The study “New Insights into the Metabolism of the Flavanones Eriocitrin and Hesperidin: A Comparative Human Pharmacokinetic Study” was published in the peer reviewed journal Antioxidant in March this year.

As the company celebrates 50 years of botanical leadership, Euromed expands its line of wellbeing solutions by launching two new ingredients from its Mediterranean fruit and vegetable extracts line.

diet may help to prevent and treat frailty in older adults, as frailty greatly contributes to increased risk for sarcopenia, an age- related progressive decline in muscle mass and function. Physical activity should always complement the diet, and muscle strength training, dietary interventions, and nutritional supplementation have been advocated as key interventions for preventing sarcopenia.

Euromed research and development scientists identified a very Mediterranean and nutrient-rich staple vegetable: spinach leaves, which are a natural way of supporting weakening muscles. In fact, despite appearances, spinach is very nutritious and contains phytoecdysteroids – naturally occurring compounds that have been shown to increase strength and muscle mass during resistance training – to reduce fatigue and to facilitate recovery. Spisar is a natural extract from spinach leaves (Spinacia oleracea), standardised to 20-hydroxyecdysone and obtained through the eco-friendly Pure- Hydro Process extraction technology. It is readily available as part of Euromed’s wider wellbeing extracts line.

The benefits of ongoing research A 12-week randomised, double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical study has recently been conducted to investigate the effect of daily supplementation with Spisar on muscle function and quality in adults (males and females) older than 50 years of age, performing physical exercise. The study was registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04612127) and has been submitted for publication in the near future.

The results of the study are likely to prove Euromed research and reveal the endless benefits of Mediterranean fruit and vegetable extracts. ●
