The picture of health With its decision to combine food ingredients and health ingredients in one event, Fi Europe is understandably acknowledging the blurring of lines between everyday foods, products with added health benefits and nutraceuticals. After all, with the average consumer able to access more knowledge than ever before about the impact of nutrition on bodily health and – in the case of sports supplementation – biohacking and enhanced performance, the ingredients market is hardly separate from the health industry.
“We are already in contact with exhibitors about replacing the distribution of brochures with a QR code system that will help reduce physical contact.”
Julien Bonvallet, Informa Markets
Invariably, Covid-19 has only increased a further surge in healthy eating, and thus demand for health ingredients, plant-based alternatives, gut health and immunity concepts and ingredients has increased. In a survey by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, one-third of respondents from ten
countries in Europe said healthy eating will be very important in the post-pandemic era. Almost as many stated that avoiding additives and preservatives will continue to be of great importance. A consumer shift towards healthier nutrition therefore means shoppers are also looking to make the right choice when it comes to sugar, salt and fat reduction. It’s a trend driven by not only consumers, but also legislative changes in the wake of an EU 10% sugar reduction target from 2015 to 2020. Beginning with analysis by Lu Ann Williams, global insights director, Innova Market Insights, Fi’s first online event gets straight to the crux of a current health trend: the prevalence of plant-based eating. Further discussions throughout the day inevitably become more specialised and calibrated to focus on specific areas of research. The final talk of the day sees Fred Gates, Technical Specialist Food Physical Properties, RSSL and Mark Auty, Research Principal, RSSL, deliver a session on how physical and microstructural insights can enhance consumer experience of plant-based foods. Day two focuses on health and wellbeing, looking at how ‘personalisation will shape the future of ingredients’ and ‘consumers’ perspectives on food and mental wellness. The rest of the weeks’ itinerary follows suit with sessions on the ‘circular economy in the fruit and vegetable juice value chain’, rethinking meat production and a final day where the future of the food and ingredients industry is considered from various angles.
The in-person event is more varied. Beginning with a presentation of market trends for the coming year, again delivered by Innova Market analyst Lu Ann Williams, day one features talks from FrieslandCampina on innovative food concepts and finishes with Timo Pajari of Valio discussing how ‘digestive wellness is driving lactose free growth’. Meanwhile, day two retains a focus on plant-based eating trends, looking at ‘the plant-based innovation landscape’ and the increasing importance of sustainability. The final day begins with Will Cowling, from market research agency FMCG Gurus, outlining the key disparities in the ‘positive nutrition versus moderation and avoidance’ debate. Cowling’s key specialism is on the ingredients and nutritional claims consumers prioritise across different categories. Towards midday the emphasis shifts to more general discussions. Sophie De Reynal, NutriMarketing, presents analysis around the notions of health and wellbeing, followed by further insights around the concept of reformulation. The concluding panel discussion for the event once again delves into the demand for plant-based foods and beverages in the retail and food service sectors.
From food ingredients and healthy solutions to regulatory information and new technologies, Fi Europe will cover the entire spectrum of trending topics in the F&B industry. Along with new virtual opportunities, the event offers an enhanced experience, more comprehensive and flexible than ever. ●
