TFWA Singapore: Another job well done


Singapore, otherwise known as the garden city, once again proved the perfect setting for last month’s TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference. In the event’s 24th year, visitors grew once again by +5% to 3,367, further reinforcing Asia and indeed Singapore as leading growth and innovation in the duty free and travel retail industry.


Nothing could be a better example of this than Changi Airport’s


10-storey multi-purpose, multi-dimensional Jewel complex. After just four years in the making, Jewel opened in April after very successful previews. These previews drew crowds the size of which almost no one anticipated. With customers queuing 45 minutes just to get out of the car


park at the end of the day, the airport was actually concerned it might not be able service demand. However, these initial teething problems were quickly addressed and when I visited Jewel in May last month it’s safe to say there was more than enough room for everyone to fully enjoy and appreciate the fruits of Changi’s labour, not to mention the tireless efforts of the 280 brands and food and beverage providers currently operating stores and outlets there. Celebrating the best in duty free & travel retail But the examples of retail excellence, customer service and innovation did not stop at Jewel. Upon leaving Singapore, TRBusiness was also able to indulge in the newest on-airport commercial offering in Terminal 4. After breezing through the fully automated departure process,


TRBusiness was met by a ribbon of exquisite animated digital artwork just above the entrance to the stunning walkthrough duty free shops themselves. Once inside the retail area, the brands came to life with bespoke merchandising units – including a beautiful Hendrick’s Gin wheelbarrow – stunning visuals and enticing interactive elements. Changi’s Terminal 4 is one of the best retail environments I have had the pleasure to visit. It is no wonder then that Changi was a double winner in the


2019 Travel Retail Awards, picking up accolades for Best Retail Environment as voted by Millennials and Best Digital & Social Media offering. However, TRBusiness is also delighted that Amsterdam Schiphol walked away with the prize for Best Customer Service; Mumbai Airport for Sense of Place and finally, Dubai International Airport for Best Retail Environment (voted by all age groups). Once again, this year’s winners and finalists have been quick to


add their winners/finalists logos to their packaging and to promote their successes, not only to the industry but also directly to the consumer. It is an honour and a privilege to be able to offer these brands, airports and retailers such a powerful marketing and communication tool. Travel Retail Awards 2019: Winners announced


On Monday 13 May, TRBusiness and m1nd-set crowned the winners of the second consumer-voted Travel Retail Awards, which took place once again at the Singapore Conrad Centennial Hotel. Delivering priceless insight backed by critical research and market


opinion, TRBusiness, m1nd-set and all in attendance honoured the products and airports that stood the ultimate test – consumer feedback. One year on from its inaugural launch, the Travel Retail Awards


continues to deliver real return on investment for suppliers, airports and retailers alike, with a total of 19 awards in 18 categories (five airport; 13 product) handed out on the evening. Guests enjoyed a night of entertainment, celebration and most


importantly – education – at an event that has broken the mould of conventional awards’ occasions to truly disrupt the industry. Aside, cocktails, a four-course sit-down dinner, drinks and


high-powered networking among some of the most important stakeholders in the industry, attendees were also treated to TRBusiness’ unmistakeable dash of hospitality – a fantastic after- party and DJ.


A seal of approval As is customary, winners will now be able to showcase the prestigious Travel Retail Awards logo, which travellers can identify at airports and on travel retail products worldwide. This has become synonymous with genuine consumer appeal and


acts as a mark of confidence in travel retail airports and products. TRBusiness and m1nd-set joined forces to devise the Travel Retail


Awards out of the notion that shopping plays an essential role in the passengers’ overall travel experience. Similar to last year, the judging process married initial blogger and


vlogger (video blogger) assessments with detailed analysis carried out among thousands of international travellers from m1nd-set’s unique database. Each product entered into the awards received assessments from travellers passing through airports in the past six months. Consumers also cast their views on their favourite airports.
