Israeli travel retailer Layam is targeting mergers and acquisitions to grow the business outside Israel. Shay Tangi, CEO, Layam told TRBusiness: “Our plan for the future is to grow the
business by mergers and acquisitions. We are trying to buy other duty free companies or establish joint-ventures with them.” Pressed by TRBusiness on whether any
deals are close to completion, Tangi commented: “Discussions are in the early stages, but we are in contact with several duty free companies in Europe and Africa. “The aim is to complete the purchase of
one retailer by the end of the year. We have strong backing and are part of a big group. If an opportunity presents itself and the price is right we will probably buy. “If we want to grow the business, we
have to do it by spending money and venturing outside Israel. “The fastest way of doing this would be
to acquire another company, but if there is an opportunity to be present at other airports in Europe or Africa, for example, we will definitely participate in the tenders if it makes sense to do so.” Established in 1936, 12 years before the
DDF to enhance retail experience with Tencent
Dubai Duty Free has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with WeChat developer Tencent Holdings Limited with a view to enhancing the travel and shopping experience for Chinese passengers. The agreement and collaboration, signed
earlier this year, involves DDF tapping into Tencent’s Social and Smart Retail Solutions including WeChat Pay, WeChat Mini Program and Tencent Cloud. The co-operation will also deepen Dubai
Duty Free’s insight into Chinese travellers’ consumption behaviours, allowing the retailer to elevate product knowledge and insight. “China is an important market for us and
Dubai Duty Free is continually looking at ways that will further enhance our appeal to Chinese travellers,” commented Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Dubai Duty Free. “With its long-standing reputation for
innovation, Tencent is an exciting partner for Dubai Duty Free and we look forward to working with them in the coming year.”

diplomatic duty free shop in Tel Aviv and liquor & tobacco and perfume & cosmetics shops in the passenger terminals at Ashdod and Haifa seaports. The company, which is a member of the
International Ship Supplier Association, also serves as a supplier for the United Nations and armed forces worldwide.
TFWA APAC visitors up 5% to 3,367
Visitors to the 24th TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference increased by 5% year-on-year to reach 3,367 delegates, up from 3,194 who attended the event in 2018. This figure included representatives
from 1,426 companies; a rise of 10.5% from 1,290 in 2018. The association registered 2,567
delegates from duty free and travel retail operators, landlords and agents, up from 2,534 last year. Exhibition floor space increased by +5.5%
to reach over 11,000sq m with a total of 314 companies exhibiting, up marginally by 1.6% from 309 the previous year. Sixty-six of these companies were
new exhibitors, which included a mix of well-known international brands and regional favourites. Four hundred and thirty six meetings
were arranged through the TFWA One2One meetings service. Monday’s conference was well attended,
with 1,481 delegates hearing from a range of keynote speakers from the duty free and travel retail industry and the wider geopolitical landscape. Alain Maingreaud, TFWA President, said: “Of course it’s gratifying to see our
numbers up yet again, but it’s not just about the quantity of visitors — quality matters too.”
