Ylläs Villas ÄKÄSLOMPOLO, FINLAND
There’s a Finnish word, ruska, which describes the brief but extraordinary autumn period when the forests of Finnish Lapland turn to deep amber, crimson, copper and gold. It’s one of the most striking seasonal transformations in Europe, and Ylläs Villas sits in an exceptional position to experience it, surrounded by the Pallas- Yllästunturi National Park. The property comprises four traditional log
villas — Stella, Polaris, Astra and Aurora — each accommodating between eight and 16 guests. Built entirely from timber, they feature warm, natural interiors scented with pine and spruce, alongside handcrafted local details. Each villa includes a private sauna, a fireplace with ample firewood and a fully equipped kitchen. Stays are typically seven nights, allowing guests time to fully settle into the rhythm of the landscape. The surrounding national park is the
region’s greatest attraction, offering extensive opportunities for outdoor exploration. In summer, the area is renowned for hiking and mountain biking, with hundreds of miles of marked trails
ranging from gentle lakeside routes to the exposed ridgelines of the fells, where ruska colours stretch across the horizon. Rivers and lakes provide excellent conditions for fishing and kayaking, from quiet paddles on Lake Äkäslompolo to longer journeys through the boreal forest. A defining feature of life in Lapland is
jokamiehenoikeus, Finland’s ‘everyman’s right’, which allows free access to roam and forage across the land. Guests can gather wild mushrooms, berries and herbs during their walks, including lingonberries and the prized golden cloudberry. Many guests return year after year, often
booking the same villa for the same week, treating it as a second home in the wilderness. The properties have been family-owned for more than 30 years and the staff employ a personal, direct style of communication that adds to the sense of familiarity. Kittilä Airport is around 33 miles away, with regular year-round flights from Helsinki and direct international routes during the winter season. An alternative, more atmospheric route is the overnight sleeper train from Helsinki to Kolari.
DON’T MISS Pick wild blueberries from the forest behind the villa, then prepare them in your own fully equipped kitchen that same evening
