Bamurru Plains & Arkaba Homestead TOP END & FLINDERS RANGES, AUSTRALIA

Located in Australia’s tropical Top End, near Darwin, Bamurru Plains sits on the coastal floodplains of the Mary River Wetlands, on the edge of Kakadu National Park. Open from April to October, Bamurru Plains captures the transition from the wet season into the dry, when the floodplains are at their most dynamic. Often described as Australia’s answer to the Okavango Delta, the 115sq-mile property is home to one of the country’s most important ecosystems. It supports 236 species of birds, agile wallabies and the highest concentration of estuarine crocodiles in the world. As the dry season progresses, receding waters reveal a mosaic of grasslands and billabongs, attracting wildlife and creating increasingly intimate encounters. Twelve tent-style bungalows are set among the

savanna woodlands and paperbark swamps of the property. Expansive mesh walls connect each sanctuary to the surrounding landscape. At the heart of the property, the main lodge is where all-inclusive meals featuring the Top End’s finest produce are served at a long timber dining

table. This is also where wilderness safaris depart from twice a day. Experiences at Bamurru Plains are designed

to immerse guests in the rhythms of the land. Airboat safaris skim across shallow floodplains and wetlands, reaching areas otherwise inaccessible, while open-sided 4WD safaris traverse the savannah, providing unobstructed views and a closer connection to the wildlife. In South Australia’s Flinders Ranges, Arkaba

Homestead provides a compelling counterpoint. Set within a 63,000-acre private conservancy, bordered by Wilpena Pound to the north and the Elder Range to the west, this restored 19th- century homestead is framed by the dramatic landscapes of these ancient mountains. Here, on Adynamathanha land, experiences unfold between craggy sandstone bluffs and river red gums, creating a powerful sense of place. The property is rich in native Australian wildlife and birdlife, among them the i red kangaroos and emus. Guided walks and safari-style drives across this vast terrain offer immersive access to its conservation story.

DON’T MISS Skim across the Mary River floodplains on an airboat, gliding past wetlands alive with birdlife and pausing to watch crocodiles
