Estancia Arroyo Verde NORTHERN PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA
Located in the remote Traful Valley, Estancia Arroyo Verde is one of Patagonia’s most remarkable private wilderness retreats, set amid dramatic Andean landscapes of forested peaks, glacial lakes and wide-open valleys. The retreat offers exceptional horse-riding opportunities and some of the Southern Hemisphere’s finest fly-fishing. San Carlos de Bariloche, the nearest airport, is just 90 minutes away by road. The Larivière family has called this valley home
for nearly a century. French-Argentine patriarch Philippe ‘Pim’ Larivière first arrived in 1932 and purchased the property two years later. It was then passed to his son Maurice, and in 1987, Maurice and his wife Meme opened it to guests. Today, it’s run by their daughters, who continue the tradition. With just seven en suite bedrooms, Arroyo Verde
is designed for complete privacy and exclusivity. There are no fixed schedules, and each stay is individually tailored. The Traful River, one of Patagonia’s most
celebrated fly-fishing waterways, runs for 10 miles through the property. Anglers wade its clear
waters in search of rainbow and brown trout, and landlocked Atlantic salmon. Nearby, the Limay River offers excellent drift-boat fishing throughout the season, while at Las Mellizas (Twin Lakes) above the lodge, wild trout rise reliably to dry flies — guides say success here is almost guaranteed. Apart from the fishing, Arroyo Verde is equally
renowned for horse-riding excursions. Beginners are matched with calm, well-trained horses, while experienced riders can take on longer mountain ascents. The half-day Cerro Frutilla ride offers sweeping views over Traful Lake and the surrounding peaks, while the full-day journey to Las Mellizas follows the Arroyo Verde stream to its high-altitude source. Cuisine is rooted in regional and family
traditions. Outdoor lunches centre on the famous asado — whole lamb and beef slow-roasted over coals — served with garden salads and homemade bread. Indoors, Argentine classics such as empanadas, carbonada and milanesas are paired with local wines, while dulce de leche pancakes have become a house signature over the years.
DON’T MISS Ride the stunning Traful Valley, climb the Andes for lake views, and fish for prized landlocked salmon
