Yangshuo Mountain Retreat YANGSHUO, CHINA

Situated on the banks of the tranquil Yulong River, Yangshuo Mountain Retreat offers a welcome escape from the pace of modern China. This 35- room eco-lodge provides an authentic countryside experience, underpinned by a strong commitment to sustainability. With exquisite riverside dining, the retreat stands apart from other Yangshuo hotels thanks to its peaceful setting and spectacular views of limestone karst peaks, towering bamboo groves, emerald rice fields and the clear waters of the Yulong River. Since 2001, Yangshuo Mountain Retreat has remained a private, serene oasis for families and small groups visiting Yangshuo. A wide range of accommodation options is

available, from luxury family suites to more modest twin rooms. Most rooms feature private balconies, and all include en suite bathrooms with 24-hour hot water, air conditioning, bathrobes, hairdryers, free wi-fi and antique furnishings. The retreat also features two dining rooms: a main space for everyday meals and a second room for events, groups and special occasions, accommodating up to 32 guests. Separate Chinese and Western

kitchens serve a la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner. The retreat rears much of its own poultry on site and sources fish and fresh produce from staff families and neighbouring farms. Guests can also enjoy a well-stocked cocktail

bar, a selection of international bottled beers and an impressive list of nearly two dozen wines. In keeping with its environmental ethos, the retreat doesn’t offer buffets or disposable items. Instead, it purifies and provides safe drinking water in reusable glass bottles, with refill stations located throughout the property. Set within a richly varied landscape, the hotel

is surrounded by much for guests to explore. The extensive gardens, filled with blooming osmanthus and fruit trees, are ideal for relaxed afternoons by the river. Beyond the grounds, guests will find caves to explore, crags to climb and forested trails to hike, as well as a 5.6-mile riverside walking and cycling path beginning at the property’s parking area. The town of Yangshuo is also just a 15-minute drive away, with transport easily arranged, and complimentary bicycles available for guests.

DON’T MISS Walk to the iconic Moon Hill, a dramatic natural arch reached by more than 700 steps, passing picturesque villages en route
