cultural context. The ninth-century Sevanavank Monastery, built from dark basalt on a peninsula overlooking the lake, remains one of Armenia’s most recognisable landmarks, best experienced early in the morning. The nearby Areguni Ridge offers elevated views across the lake and volcanic plateau, while further afield, medieval monasteries and artisan villages continue long-standing traditions, from carpet weaving to ceramics. Access from Yerevan takes approximately 90
minutes, with the journey itself revealing the scale of Armenia’s landscape.
