Sani Mountain Escape MOKHOTLONG, LESOTHO
Perched on the summit of the iconic Sani Pass, Sani Mountain Escape sits on the border of South Africa and Lesotho within the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Unesco World Heritage Site. The region is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, high-altitude terrain and sweeping vistas. Travellers reach the lodge via Sani Pass, a steep,
winding gravel road with sharp switchbacks and sheer drops. This challenging ascent has become a rite of passage for 4WD enthusiasts and adventurous visitors, offering breathtaking views and a true sense of remoteness. At the summit, the environment changes. The
air is thinner, the pace slower and the scenery unspoiled. Sani Mountain Escape embraces its remote setting, operating off-grid with self-generated energy and carefully managed resources. Weather here can shift rapidly, but this rawness is part of its appeal. Accommodation at the lodge is simple yet
thoughtfully designed. Six traditional Basotho- style huts and three family rooms accommodate two, four or six guests, with space for up to 36
visitors in total. Each unit is insulated and double- glazed, with wood-burning fireplaces and en-suite bathrooms, providing warmth and comfort against the mountain climate. At the heart of the lodge is the highest pub
in Africa, accompanied by a 50-seat restaurant serving hearty, familiar dishes made from locally sourced ingredients and those transported up the pass. The dining experience is unpretentious yet satisfying, with a quiet connection to place. The surrounding landscape offers a variety of
activities. Travellers can explore high-altitude hiking trails, ride Basotho ponies, join cultural tours, go stargazing or enjoy birdwatching. The area is home to unique high-altitude species such as the Drakensberg Rockjumper and the endangered Bearded Vulture, while smaller wildlife, including Sloggett’s ice rats, can be spotted near the lodge. What’s more, Sani Mountain Escape maintains
strong ties with the local community, supporting employment and contributing to the preservation of this remote environment.
