Kaslo Hotel BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA

There’s a moment along the lakeshore drive into Kaslo when the mountains close in and the road narrows to a thread between ancient cedar and cold water. It’s here that the sense of arrival begins to shift — this is somewhere distinctly removed. Cradled between the Selkirk and Purcell ranges on the shores of Kootenay Lake, Kaslo is one of British Columbia’s most compelling towns. At its centre, as it has since 1896, stands the

Kaslo Hotel. Built during the silver boom, when the town briefly imagined itself a city, the property has outlasted the mines, a fire and more than a century of reinvention. Today, it remains an elegantly updated heritage hotel, where original character sits comfortably alongside modern detail. Rooms are spacious, with high ceilings, private balconies and uninterrupted lake views stretching towards the surrounding peaks. Penthouse suites add full kitchens, while in-house spa facilities offer a well-placed point of recovery after days spent outdoors. The Waypoint Restaurant & Bar anchors the main floor and has become a destination in its own right. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the

lake, while menus shift with the seasons, drawing on regional produce. Local wines and craft beers are well represented, and the Friday prime rib has developed a loyal following. In summer, Kootenay Lake becomes the

focal point, with opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing. Trails rise quickly from town into forest and alpine terrain, offering routes at every level. A short walk along the waterfront leads to the SS Moyie, the world’s oldest intact passenger sternwheeler, preserved in dry dock since 1957. Each August, the Kaslo Jazz Etc Summer Music Festival brings three days of live music to the lakefront. Winter shifts the experience entirely. The

Selkirks are known for deep, consistent powder, drawing those seeking backcountry terrain and remote access. Through Stellar Heliskiing, the hotel’s sister operation, guests can reach high alpine runs within minutes. Nearby, Whitewater Ski Resort offers a more traditional downhill experience, while snowmobiling routes and the thermal pools of Ainsworth Hot Springs add further contrast.

DON’T MISS Wake early for a lake-view balcony sunrise over still water with silhouettes of the mountains in the distance
