How should people decide on a career path? “When I was leaving school I had no idea what I wanted to do. The best piece of advice I had came from
my mum, who said: ‘Do something you love that makes you happy’. I love working with food and people, so naturally the answer was hospitality. “It’s an industry where you start from the
bottom and work your way up, and that is the best way to learn the trade and to gain practical experience to help you grow your career.”
What are the best ways to set yourself apart for a promotion or career advancement? “Keep your eye out for opportunities to help in different departments, sections or sites within your company, as that will help round out your experience and give you a good overall view of the business. This will show that you’re adaptable, willing to learn and ready to take on anything, including any promotions that might come your way.”
What advice would you give to school or college leavers? “Be positive, ask questions and give your all in everything you do.”

How can aspiring chefs develop their careers? “Read cookbooks and quiz your older peers on their industry knowledge.”
What are the best ways to set yourself apart for a promotion or career advancement? “It’s important to be self-motivated and willing to learn. If you aren’t going to push yourself, you are
going to fall behind. And turn up to work on time – it sounds simple, but it doesn’t go unnoticed.”
What advice would you give to school or college leavers? “Money isn’t everything when you start out. Gaining good experience in a reputable business will be far more valuable to you in the long run than chasing money immediately. It’s important that you value yourself and that you don’t get taken advantage of. Instead, focus on learning as much as you can while you are young – money will come with experience.”
