Pubs
Pubs and bars are sociable workplaces with great team camaraderie; they are also fantastic places to build a career. It’s easy to find a venue that suits your career aspirations, whether that’s a buzzing drinks-led bar where you can learn to mix cocktails, a food-focused pub offering incredible meals with wine pairings and great service levels, or a community venue where you can get to know the locals. The roles available are as varied
as the range of venues: from chefs to hosts, waiters, bar staff, and managers up to head office
positions. Large groups such as Mitchells & Butlers, Fuller’s and Greene King as well as smaller operators such as Peach pub group, Oakman Inns and Chestnut Group offer great training programmes and opportunities to develop across properties. Best of all, whether you work in a bar for a summer or a few years or build your career there, you’ll learn skills, such as being able to interact confidently with customers and adapt to busy work environments, that will stand you in good stead wherever life takes you.
“You never know what will happen next”
“I’m an Aussie and came to the UK on a gap year, when I got a bar job with Peach Pubs. That was eight years ago and now I’m the general manager of one of their lovely, historic Hertfordshire pubs. I’ve been able to train and gain qualifications, including my Wine & Spirit Education Trust Level 2 and personal licence, and become a fire marshal and first aider. “All my passion for food and drink has been met by working
in pubs. The opportunities are boundless, and if you have the passion and the drive, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. “I love the community feel of pubs. They are a hub for all –
locals, visitors, families – and we’re such a part of their lives. You see couples getting engaged and having wedding drinks, celebrating the birth of a baby and then a second baby – the special occasions in their lives and also the sad moments, like when they lose a loved one. I never expected a key part of the job to be how important pubs are to their local communities, and it’s part of why I love it. People aren’t just there for a drink, but for the personal touch they find in pubs. “No two days are ever the same in a pub. Every day is
new, every day brings new challenges. You can be leading a menu tasting session one day and then driving a regular back home the next. You never know what will happen next, it’s so varied and so exciting. You also develop transferable skills to cope with new experiences. You’re always growing as a manager and as a person.”
