Imagine that you are an alien. Choose one of the objects pictured below (or another simple object) and explain how you think it works. The most inventive explanation wins.

An explanation is a text that explains how something works, or how or why something happens. Structure:


Top tip!


Explanations are not ‘how to’ texts. Those are instructions.


ƒ Title − Usually presented in the form of a question. ƒ Definition − A brief description or fact about the thing you will be explaining.


ƒ Description – A logical, step-by-step explanation of how or reasons why, often supported by diagrams.


ƒ Applications – What the object is designed to do or can be used for. ƒ Summary – A brief summary of the main points.
