Grammar – The Apostrophe
The apostrophe is used to show that letters have been removed from shortened words. These are called contractions, e.g. should have should’ve (NOT ‘should of’), it will it’ll.
Top tip! It’s = it is. It’s time for dinner.
Its = ownership. The dog lost its ball.
A In your copy, rewrite these using contractions where possible. 1. “You should not eat too much sugar. It will damage your teeth,” said the dentist. 2. “It is such a beautiful day that I am sure they will enjoy the park,” said Karl. 3. Patricia would have walked to the shop if she had known it was so close. 4. “It is not very cold today, so I might not bring my coat,” thought Cian. 5. Paulina would not like to visit the beach, because she does not like sand. 6. I cannot help you with your homework. You will have to do it yourself. 7. “What has happened to the mice?” asked Maria. “They have disappeared,” replied Luca.
The apostrophe can also be used to show ownership. For a single owner, we add ’s to the end of the word, e.g. the cat’s tail. For a single owner ending in ‘s’, the rule is the same, e.g. James’s house. For a plural owner ending in ‘s’, just add an apostrophe after the ‘s’, e.g. the boys’ jumpers. For an irregular plural owner not ending in ‘s’, add ’s, e.g. the men’s coats.
B Rewrite these with an apostrophe. 1. The toys belonging to the girls 2. The worm belonging to the bird 3. The puppies belonging to the dogs
