Grammar – Adjectives
An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. It usually comes before the noun (or pronoun), e.g. The vicious dog snapped at the terrified boy.
A Odd one out
Underline the adjective in each list that does not belong. Name the simple synonym that the remaining words describe. Use a dictionary or a thesaurus to help you.
1. feeble, scrawny, frail, brawny, fragile 2. gleeful, dismal, thrilled, ecstatic, contented 3. contemporary, decrepit, modern, recent, current 4. courteous, considerate, disrespectful, mannerly, gracious 5. arctic, chilly, frigid, freezing, sweltering
Adjectives can be organised into seven groups depending on what they describe about a noun. They are usually placed in the following order in a sentence:
1. Determiner (a word that shows the noun being described), e.g. this, the, a, some 2. Opinion, e.g. beautiful, terrifying, ugly, cruel, interesting, delightful 3. Size and shape, e.g. long, gigantic, minuscule, heavy, narrow, deep, square 4. Condition and age, e.g. ancient, tattered, wet, clean, pristine, modern 5. Colour and pattern, e.g. red, crimson, striped, checked, flowery, green, golden 6. Origin (nationality or religion), e.g. French, Muslim, Polish, Hindu, Irish 7. Material, e.g. wooden, silken, furry, diamond
B In your copy, rewrite these, placing the adjectives in the correct order and using commas to separate each list.

1. The striped old woollen ugly scarf fluttered in the wind. 2. Justin owns beautiful that stone modern big house. 3. My mum gave me this flowery pretty new dress. 4. I borrowed this French interesting tattered book from Gertrude. 5. Mrs Quinn is very proud of porcelain her antique patterned vase. 6. Andrea’s dog is a scruffy huge terrifying mongrel, but she still loves him.
Usually, we use no more than
three adjectives at a time.
