Grammar – Speech Marks

Speech marks (“ ”) are placed before and after direct speech to show exactly what a person has said. The punctuation (comma, full stop, exclamation mark or question mark) is always placed inside the speech marks.

Examples: Helen asked Emma, “Can I borrow your pencil?” “It’s cold there,” reported the meteorologist, “so wrap up warmly.” “I’m tired!” wailed the little boy.

A In your copy, rewrite these sentences using direct speech. 1. Mum told Jay to go upstairs and clean his room.

2. Irena asked Ethan to help her with her homework. 3. The lecturer told his students that their assignment was due next week. 4. The meteorologist announced that there would be a storm tomorrow. 5. Max asked where his glasses were. His mum said that they were upstairs. 6. Yasmina yelled at her sister to tidy up her side of the bedroom. 7. The marine biologist explained that a whale is actually a mammal.

When writing long pieces of dialogue in a story, begin a new paragraph each time the person speaking changes. This helps the reader to keep track of who is speaking.

Example: “What are you doing inside, Tom?” asked Ms Martinez. “I’m just looking for my jacket, Miss,” explained Tom. “I can’t find it.”

B In your copy, rewrite this conversation using the correct punctuation.

Joanna get in here now shouted her mum. What is it asked Joanna as she ran into her bedroom. Your room looks like a bomb hit it replied Mum you need to clean it right now. Oh but Mum my favourite TV show is on, can I do it when it’s over. I don’t care Joanna, this is a disgrace. Ok fine sighed Joanna I’ll watch TV later.

C In your copy, write the conversation between each pair. 1. An excited mother and daughter about to board an aeroplane

2. A girl looking guilty while a cross-looking man leans over her, pointing his finger at a broken window in the background

3. Two boys smiling widely, one is opening a birthday present from the other 4. A small boy crying, holding his cut knee, while an older child comforts him
