Bring in some objects or photographs from home. These could relate to a special event, time, person or place. Describe each item to the class, including memories and feelings. If you do not have an object of your own, use the pictures provided and create imaginary descriptions, memories and feelings.


Writing Genre – Narrative Writing


The language of a narrative should include: ƒ nouns and pronouns that refer to specific characters, e.g. they, he, Bruno. ƒ first or third person: I, we or he, they, she. ƒ past tense, e.g. roamed, exclaimed. ƒ action verbs, e.g. crept, fluttered. ƒ descriptive adjectives used to create imagery, e.g. sluggish, mystical, hideous. ƒ linking words to show time, e.g. early the next morning, at the same time. ƒ dialogue using direct speech, e.g. “What do you think you’re doing?” shouted the Garda. ƒ verbs showing what was said, thought or felt, e.g. announced, wondered, snapped. ƒ language devices to create imagery, e.g. similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia.
