B During reading: I think … because …

Use the strategy of Inferring. While reading, stop along the way to make inferences using evidence from the text.

ƒ “Reading between the lines, I think that … because …” ƒ “The poet says … but I think he means … because …” ƒ I think the poet is trying to tell me … because …”

C After reading: Main-idea pyramid

Use the strategies of Determining Importance and Summarising. As a class, brainstorm the main points of the text on post-it notes. Group these points into categories and place them at the bottom of a pyramid. Combine the grouped points into one point on the next level of the pyramid. Keep doing this until one point remains.

D After reading: This makes me feel …

Use the strategies of Making Connections and Visualising. Read back over the text and try to make connections.

ƒ “This reminds me of …” ƒ “This makes me think about …” ƒ “This makes me feel … because …”

On a sheet of paper, draw a picture to show what connections you have made with the text, especially how it makes you feel. Pick one line (or quote) from the text that you connected with especially and write it somewhere in or around your picture. As a class, you could display your pictures at your graduation.
