How to Use this Book Comprehension strategies

This book continues building on the comprehension strategies learned at earlier levels of the Word Wizard series. Pupils are now exposed to a variety of engaging activities designed to foster their comprehension skills before, during and after reading.

This symbol indicates a comprehension activity to be carried out before reading. This symbol indicates a comprehension activity to be carried out during reading. This symbol indicates a comprehension activity to be carried out after reading.

Care has been taken to make these activities as general as possible so that they may be applied to other texts such as a class novel.

Some activities are repeated in order to give pupils sufficient practice in important strategies that will help them to use these strategies independently with future texts.

For a detailed explanation of all comprehension strategies, see page vi. Vocabulary development STOP Use your dictionary to find out the meaning of the bold words below.

!

A stop sign appears before each comprehension reading passage, asking pupils to use their dictionary to find out the meaning of the bold words in the text before reading. This is designed to facilitate the teaching of tricky vocabulary prior to reading the text.

Cloze procedure

A cloze procedure closely linked to the reading passage has been included in each unit. In the first four units (leading up to October mid-term), the missing words are provided in a word box. In subsequent units, the answers can be found on pages 113−114. This allows for much needed practice, helps with confidence-building and develops familiarity with cloze procedures.

Dictation

Three dictation sentences are provided for each unit, incorporating the phonics and grammar taught. Suggestions are provided for extension activities or further revision of grammar. Assessment A self-assessment feature appears below each dictation activity.

I can do this! I'm getting there. I need help!

Two units dedicated to revision and assessment are provided at the end of the second and third terms. Each includes a special four-day section designed to prompt meaningful revision of phonics and grammar before assessment begins.

Extra

Each unit concludes with a suggested activity for extension work that facilitates integration within the areas of art, debate, drama and others.
