Oral Language A Don’t say it!

Text-specific vocabulary is important when writing reports. In pairs, practise this skill by playing ‘Don’t say it’. Pupil A describes an object/person/place to their partner without using its name, e.g. “Used to process and store information. Made up of a CPU and a screen. Gigabytes and hard drive are some of the terms associated with it.” ... A computer! Once pupil B guesses correctly, swap roles.

Writing Genre – Report Writing

The purpose of report writing is to present factual information to the reader. Structure:

ƒ Classification (introduction) − In the form of a definition or a short description. Give a general overview and save the details for later.

ƒ Description − A detailed description of the topic using sub-headings. Try to make the sub-headings clever or funny to draw your reader’s attention.

ƒ Summarising comment (conclusion) − Can include an impersonal comment evaluating the topic.

ƒ Other − A labelled diagram, a fact box or a glossary (a dictionary with subject- specific vocabulary).

A Plan, organise and write a report about a civilisation of your choice.

1. Choose your civilisation. Examples could include the Egyptians, the Incas, Native Americans, the Romans or any other civilisation that interests you.

2. You will need to research your civilisation using the internet or books. In your copy, draw a mind map like the template below. Each civilisation has different important information, so decide on the best topics to write about from your research and include them in your mind map. For example:

Cities The Maya Culture Decline

3. Using the information in your mind map, write the first draft of your report. Remember to include interesting information to inform and entertain your reader.

B Art activity

Use the internet to research ancient Mayan art with your teacher. Then, create ceremonial Mayan mosaic masks with cut-up squares of paper on a large piece of card. Use two or three bright colours and some tinfoil or gold paper if you can.
