1. In your answer define (explain) ‘sources’ and say B and D are sources because … Then define ‘evidence’ and say A and C are evidence because … (see Chapter 1, p. 1 for explanation of ‘source’ and ‘evidence’).
3. Make use of information from A to D in answering this. You only need to make a couple of points depending on how many marks are given for the question. For example, you can refer to B and D by saying historians need Latin to study the original document; refer to A to say you cannot be sure the translation is accurate/ correct; refer to A to say historians need to know the meaning of ‘indulgences’; refer to A to say historians need to know what is happening to St Peter’s Basilica to understand what is going on.
2. You should quote parts of the extract in support of your views when you are answering this question, e.g. Luther is critical of the Pope. In number 5, Luther says the Pope … In number 86, he says the Pope is rich and should … On the other hand, Luther supports the poor. In number 43, Luther says it is better to … In number 86, he says the Pope should pay for building St Peter’s Basilica rather than taking the money from the poor.
4. In answering a ‘useful document’, refer to Chapter 1, p. 8. In saying why historians consider it a useful document, you can refer to primary source; first- hand account; researching Luther’s life; researching the beginning of the Reformation.
