9 HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION (HCI)
Interactivity Unlimited (IU) is a consultancy which helps clients get the best possible results from their websites and digital system interfaces. Our usability consultants employ a wide range of tools to find out what users want from their interactions, and to ensure that the interfaces can provide these in a user-friendly way. We also consider the ergonomics of devices.
E-Tail Ltd provides four different versions of its website for users to access: computer Internet browser, conventional mobile, smart phone and TV. IU recently conducted an evaluation of the usability of the E-Tail site. Our report highlights some of the important issues to consider in website design, particularly in relation to mobile devices. Our research used a combination of computer-based and human sciences-based methodologies. To begin with, a focus group of volunteers used the different interfaces on a regular basis. This was followed by an heuristic evaluation, using sets of five evaluators working independently.
These are our suggestions for improving the usability of the smart
phone site: ● Use auto-complete to speed up filling in forms. ● Limit the size of the site, so that it fits on the screen more easily. ● Keep the number of clicks needed to get to information to a minimum.
● Ensure that clickable items are separated by enough white space so the user does not click on the wrong link.
